RIDDOR changes for October 2013

The Health & Safety Executive has announced that from 1 October 2013 changes will be introduced to the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) that will simplify the mandatory reporting of workplace injuries for businesses.

New law to allow prosecutions for poor care

Care Services Minister Norman Lamb has indicated at the Liberal Democrat party conference that the Government intends to introduce a law to allow trusts and other healthcare providers to be prosecuted for neglect and poor care.

National Minimum Wage rate increase from 1 October 2013

1 October 2013

From 1 October 2013, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) increased from £6.19 to £6.31 per hour for workers aged 21 and over. From that date, the rate for 18 to 20-year-olds increased to £5.03, the rate for 16 to 17-year-olds to £3.72 and the apprentice rate for apprentices aged under 19, or 19 and over and in the first year of their apprenticeship, to £2.68.

First aid regulations: revised guidance published

From 1 October 2013, the Health and Safety (First-aid) Regulations 1981 are amended, to remove the requirement for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to approve first-aid training and qualifications. The HSE has published revised guidance to help businesses put in place appropriate arrangements for the provision of first aid.

UK businesses worried about energy blackouts

A survey of 526 business leaders undertaken by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and KPMG shows that 95% of firms are concerned about the cost of energy and 90% are concerned about security of supply, meaning that worries about energy have overtaken worries about transport for most businesses.

GP contract to establish 24/7 care for older people

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has confirmed that he intends to change the GP contract to include a responsibility for practices to have a “named GP” to co-ordinate out-of-hospital care for vulnerable older people from 2014.
