CQC reports for first time on GP out-of-hours care

Chief Inspector of General Practice Professor Steve Field has said that results from the first extensive inspections of GP out-of-hours services under the new Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection regime exceeded expectations.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has addressed GPs at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) conference, saying federations of practices with a shared GP record will have to deliver seven-day access by 2020.

Mental health appointment waiting time standards to be brought in line with cancer targets

The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, has announced that treatment for mental health conditions will be brought into line with other NHS services with the introduction of the first ever waiting time standards. Bringing treatment for mental health problems on a par with physical health will end years of discrimination. There will also be £120 million to improve mental health services.

Open letter on state of NHS and social care services published

An open letter from a coalition of leaders of unions, charities and medical royal colleges including the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has been published in the Independent newspaper, calling on politicians to address the funding crisis in the NHS and social care services.

GPs warned too many patients attending A&E

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has said that notifications to GPs from local hospitals warning that A&E departments were under severe pressure, which is commonplace in winter, are now being sent “throughout the year”.
