Government publishes new mental health priorities

The Department of Health has published a policy paper, Closing the Gap: Priorities for Essential Change in Mental Health, setting out 25 priorities for action on mental health services for adults and young people over the next two to three years.

New residential care rules for vulnerable children — January 2014

Education Services Grant - 2014/15

The total funding transfer for the Education Services Grant (ESG) in 2014-15 is £1.03 billion. It has been reduced from the original estimate of £1.22 billion, which was based on expenditure data for 2011-12. The new figure was recalculated on the basis of local authority expenditure for 2012-13 and is likely to represent a 20% reduction in per-pupil funding.

Social work – proposed changes to recruitment and training

In a speech to the NSPCC on 12 November 2013, Michael Gove set out his intentions in relation to child protection. In particular, he indicated that there will be significant changes to the recruitment, training and organisation of social workers. Among the key points outlined in his speech were:
