The British Standards Institute (BSI) is inviting views on draft standard ISO 50015: Energy Management Systems – Measurement and Verification of Organisational Energy Performance – General Principles and Guidance. Those wishing to comment can do so via the BSI website until 6 November 2013.

Report on REACH and CLP compliance

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published a new report on compliance with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regime, and the European Regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP), which found that 67% of the inspected companies were non-compliant with one or more provisions of REACH or CLP.

SWMP Regulations repealed

The Government has repealed the Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP) Regulations 2008 were revoked on 1 December 2013 with effect from 1 October 2013. The regulations applied to England only.

Using trees to monitor air pollution in cities

It may be possible to use trees to monitor levels of air pollution in cities, research suggests. A Belgian study found evidence that leaves of urban trees change both chemically and physiologically when exposed to different levels of air pollution. If these changes are carefully quantified, trees could provide cheap and widespread “bio-indicators”, the study’s authors suggest.
