With children returning to school in much of England and people once again attending sports and music events in their thousands, many experts are predicting a rise in Covid-19 cases.

Children went back to schools in Scotland earlier than in England, and Scotland has already seen an increase in infections.

In this context, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has called on organisations not to let their guard down and to ensure that the virus does not spread through workplaces.

Employers must ensure they continue to have robust measures in place to prevent transmission and, as the holidays end and people begin to return to the workplace, now would be a good time to review the effectiveness of all safety procedures.

The Institution’s Head of Health and Safety Ruth Wilkinson said now is not a time to be complacent as Covid-19 remains a hazard within the workplace.

“Risk assessments are the starting point for it all”, Ms Wilkinson concluded, “as they can help to identify the risks of transmission, persons at higher risk, and importantly the proportionate controls to protect workers, clients, consumers and communities.”
