There have been several reports recently by transport groups looking at how the passenger transport system can recover from the coronavirus crisis (see Rebuilding the bus market in a post-Covid world).

The latest to put forward its views is the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) which outlines, in Covid-19 Recovery: Renewing the Transport System, how the transport system can be transformed as part of a recovery programme.

Its report, which can be found at bettertransport.org.uk, calls for a world-leading public transport network with improved connectivity.

It urges the Government to ensure that local authorities and bus operators work together to re-plan bus provision, with better integrated, multi-modal networks.

Local transport authorities should, CBT argues, produce plans linked to future government funding to permanently reshape local transport networks around active travel, shared and public transport.

It notes that the impact of Covid-19 on bus services has led to uncertainty that has undermined traditional business models.

However, CBT continues, buses are the backbone of local public transport networks across the country, with a full double-decker taking up to 75 cars off the road and are already a more sustainable way to travel.

The report suggests that the Traffic Commissioners could play a role in ensuring an integrated network provision, in co-operation with local authorities, by refusing to register a commercial service, if it undermined the local network.

CBT also calls on the Government to progress the electric bus town programme and to deliver a similar scale scheme for hydrogen buses.
