Following a high-profile campaign by Bristol student Fahma Mohamed, Michael Gove has confirmed that the Department for Education will produce guidance on keeping pupils safe from female genital mutilation (FMG). It will be sent to all schools by Easter.
It will cover:
how teachers’ and other members of school staff’s statutory safeguarding duties apply to FMG
factors that heighten the risk of a pupil becoming a victim of FMG
indicators that a pupil may have become a victim already
links to external expert advice on specific safeguarding issues from the NSPCC.
Michael Gove is also looking into teacher training and how education about FMG can be made age-appropriate.
