Education Secretary, Damian Hinds, has launched a number of projects designed to improve children’s early language and literacy skills backed by nearly £18 million of Government funding.

Disadvantaged families will benefit from extra support to nurture their child’s early development at home including educational games, apps and text message “tips” for parents and carers to encourage them to interact with their children during everyday activities. There will also be additional training for early years staff to identify speech, language and communication needs early on and investment in new projects for voluntary and community groups to improve early language, literacy and communication skills.

Research has demonstrated the importance of the home environment for a child’s early learning since “education begins long before children arrive in the classroom”, explained Mr Hinds. His aim is to halve the percentage of children who leave Reception without the early communication or reading skills they need by 2028.
