In May it was confirmed by the Mayor of London that the capital’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) would be expanded in October 2021.
That deadline (25 October) is now almost upon us and the ULEZ will then expand from central London to create a single, larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205).
Most vehicles need to either meet the ULEZ emissions standards or pay a daily charge to drive inside the zone. This is £12.50 for most vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles and vans (up to and including 3.5 tonnes).
However, lorries, vans or specialist heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, or buses, minibuses and coaches weighing over 5 tonnes do not need to pay the ULEZ charge when paying the stricter LEZ charge.
This guide includes a tool which allows drivers to find out if their vehicle meets the emissions standard and the charges they will need to pay.
The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year except Christmas Day. The current emissions standards will continue and include Euro 6 (NOx and PM) for diesel cars, vans and other specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including five tonnes).
