The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has launched a consultation on environmental targets to support the delivery of the Government’s priorities, including those set out in the 25 Year Environment Plan.

Among the environmental targets being proposed are:

  • a reduction of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment pollution from agriculture to the water environment by at least 40% by 2037 against a 2018 baseline

  • a reduction of phosphorus loadings from treated wastewater by 80% by 2037 against a 2020 baseline

  • a reduction of the use of public water supply in England per head of population by 20% by 2037 against a 2019/20 baseline

  • an annual mean concentration target of 10µg/m3 of PM2.5 air quality to be met across England by 2040

  • a population exposure reduction target of a 35% reduction in population exposure of PM2.5 by 2040 (compared to a base year of 2018).

Comments on the targets proposed in the consultation document should be submitted via the online survey by 27 June 2022.
