The UK Civil Aviation has issued a formal exemption for the transport of UN 1992 methanol solution by air.

This exemption has been added to the List of Official Record Series 4 — Miscellaneous (ORSR No. 1337) and is subject to the following conditions:

  1. the packages containing Flammable liquid, toxic, n.o.s., (Methanol solution) may only be forwarded for carriage on board aircraft by Royal Mail Group Plc, Guernsey Post Limited or Jersey Post Limited;

  2. the Flammable liquid, toxic, n.o.s., (Methanol solution) shall be transported for purposes related to cervical smear tests having been consigned by, or at the specific request of a qualified medical practitioner, registered nurse or a recognised laboratory or institution;

  3. the Flammable liquid, toxic, n.o.s., (Methanol solution) shall be prepared for shipment in accordance with the Excepted Quantity provisions of the Technical Instructions, except that the EQ marking should not be applied;

  4. when containing patient specimens, the consignments must also comply with Packing Instruction 650 of the ICAO Technical Instructions; and

  5. persons preparing the Flammable liquid, toxic, n.o.s., (Methanol solution) and patient specimens for shipment may receive written instructions in lieu of the training specified in Part 1;4 of the Technical Instructions, sufficient to enable them to prepare the Flammable liquid, toxic, n.o.s., (Methanol solution) and patient specimens in accordance with the ICAO Technical Instructions and this exemption.
