Introduction

Employers are legally required to take care of their employees and this extends to dealing with work-related stress.

Stress can be caused by work-related matters or personal matters or both. In all cases stress can adversely affect the health of individuals, which in turn can affect organisations.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published Management Standards for Work-related Stress on its website to help employers to deal with this matter. The HSE defines work-related stress as:

The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work.
