What is a safe system of work?

A safe system of work is the outcome of risk assessment. It will include different elements appropriate to the risk, such as:

  • supervision of how the work is carried out

  • correct tools and equipment

  • training and instruction

  • competent workers

  • information provision.

Case law shows that courts expect each job to be considered in relation to its particular circumstances and risks, such as:

  • the physical layout of the job

  • the way and sequence in which the work is to be carried out

  • the provision of warnings and notices

  • the issue of special instructions and training.
