Working at height is one of the most dangerous of work activities.
Statistics from the Health and Safety Executive show that, in 2018/19, falls from height were the most common cause of fatal accidents. Working at height resulted in 40 fatal accidents — 27% of all workplace fatalities.
Working at height is also a common work activity. It is obviously very prevalent during building construction work and maintenance, but it also takes place in many other workplaces in some shape or form, eg during cleaning and decorating; plant maintenance; storage and warehousing; and horticulture and agriculture. Office and retail workers may do some work at height, such as when retrieving files on high shelving or putting stock out.
