Introduction

Exposure to vibration can occur during a number of workplace activities and carries potential health hazards. The main medical conditions include the following.

  • Hand–arm vibration is vibration transmitted from work processes into workers’ hands and arms. It can be caused by operating hand-held power tools, such as road breakers, and hand-guided equipment, such as powered lawnmowers, or by holding materials being processed by machines, such as pedestal grinders.

  • Hand–Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), which refers to damage to muscles, joints, circulation and nerves in the hand and arm caused by HAV.
