Tackling stress involves a three-stage process:

  • identification of risk factors which may cause employees to suffer stress

  • action to be taken to remove or at least sufficiently reduce such factors

  • steps to be taken to enable individual employees to manage stress when, in spite of attempts at prevention, it does nevertheless occur.

Identification of Risks

All organisations should carry out a risk assessment, a useful framework for which is set out in the HSE publication 5 steps to risk assessment. The five steps are:

  • identify the hazards

  • decide who might be harmed and how

  • evaluate the risk by:

    • identifying what action the organisation is already taking

    • deciding whether this is enough
