Legislation Relevant to Stress at Work

Although there is at present no legislation dealing specifically with stress, there are various pieces of legislation that may be used to bring a case against an employer.

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 places a duty on employers to ensure, “so far as is reasonably practicable”, the health, safety and welfare of all employees.

  • The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 set out minimum standards (eg lighting and rest facilities) for the physical working environment.
