The first problem encountered in any attempt to deal with stress is defining exactly what it is. The difficulties commonly experienced arise:

  • partly from confusion in the use of language

  • partly from the fact that stress affects different people in different ways — the same stress factors can affect any one individual in a variety of ways under different circumstances.

Although stress is a major problem, it is not a recognised medical condition but rather:

  • an umbrella term for a diverse range of problems

  • caused by a variety of factors requiring an equally wide range of responses to tackle them.
