This unit provides learning support for Care Certificate Standard 8.1a which requires trainees to “Describe the importance of food safety, including hygiene, in the preparation and handling of food”: as part of Standard 8.1: Understand the Principles of Hydration, Nutrition and Food Safety. This unit is also relevant in relation to Standard 15: Infection Prevention and Control.
All care homes and nursing homes will provide catering services for their service users. Food will generally be produced by dedicated kitchen or catering staff and may be served by care staff who will also be available to help service users to eat and drink where they need assistance.
