Appraisal has a strong, forward-looking element and many organisations find that setting, monitoring and reviewing objectives is a sound way of improving and tracking performance. Depending on the culture, this can be very formalised, but a common characteristic amongst many managers is that setting well-defined objectives needs practice, hence the time allocated to this unit.
