By the end of the session the trainee will be able to:

  • state the unit of measurement for noise

  • be aware of typical noise levels

  • be aware of the noise levels in at least one part of the organisation.

It is useful to have at least one sound level meter available for demonstration.

The decibel

Explain that in order to determine what levels of noise pose a risk to health we need to be able to measure noise levels. To express the level of noise we use a unit called the decibel (abbreviated as dB). Explain that the human ear has a massive range of sensitivity to changes in pressure.
