This session is fundamental to later work — it may be necessary to spend longer than an hour if the group needs time to reach understanding on the principles. This extra time should not exceed about 20 minutes.


By the end of the session the trainees should be aware of:

  • activities which involve manual handling

  • the definition of manual handling

  • the types of injuries and consequent ill-health caused by manual handling

  • the duties of the employer and employee with regard to manual handling.

Welcome trainees and discuss administrative and domestic arrangements

Welcome the trainees. Outline the administrative and domestic arrangements, ie breaks, meals, fire procedures, location of toilets, smoking arrangements, messages, etc.
