At the end of this session trainees will:

  • understand the need for legislative control

  • be aware of health and safety and fire safety legislation appropriate to their workplace

  • have familiarised themselves with duties of employees

  • understand the penalties of non-compliance with the law.

The Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974

Introduce the legal requirements surrounding fire and emergency procedures

Show slide Fire Legislation. Tell the group that while they are at work there are certain legal requirements placed upon them and the employer. Discuss the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974 (HSWA). Explain that it covers all employees and employers in the workplace. Explain that there is also a duty to protect non-employees such as visitors.
