The obvious reason for supervisors and line managers to delegate work is because they cannot do everything themselves. A second reason, which delegates who have reached this stage of the course should need little prompting to come up with, is that delegation is an important element in any employee development programme.

However, delegation is a classic example of an aspect of good management to which much lip service is paid, but with all too little actual positive action. This tends to be due to certain fears that exist in the minds of most managers, namely:

  • the fear that no one else will do the job as well as they themselves can

  • the fear of delegating authority along with responsibility
