The purpose of this role play is to give delegates the opportunity to practise two things:

  • giving constructive, rather than destructive, criticism

  • giving really meaningful praise.

Role plays should be conducted in syndicate groups, with feedback being provided in the groups in three (or four) stages.

  1. The person practising giving criticism and/or praise should be allowed to say how they felt it went.

  2. The person “on the receiving end” should say how it felt to them.

  3. The observers should then comment.

  4. Finally the tutor, if present, should comment on any important points that have not already been covered.

If it is possible to record role plays on video, this can make feedback even more useful.
