  • specify concisely and definitively the disciplinary rules

  • explain the process and sanctions for non-compliance.

Managers should aim to achieve a fair and consistent handling of all disciplinary and performance issues.

Disciplinary action aimed at improvement should always be the first priority. The punitive element of discipline should only be used when positive initiatives fail. Dismissal should be the absolute last resort.
