Trainer’ Guidelines


There are always different options to consider in the control of risks related to hazardous substances. In this exercise, trainees are encouraged to think widely and identify different options for control of a familiar risk.


  1. Split trainees into groups of three and ask all the groups to consider the following simple maintenance job. They should consider the hazards and control measures required when stripping and repainting a door. The process calls for:

    1. using a corrosive caustic paint stripper

    2. scraping off the residues

    3. sanding the door

    4. applying an oil solvent-based paint system

    5. cleaning the equipment used.
