This topic covers the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations 2005 (RTWTR) and outlines details of the working week, rest and break periods. It also summarises who is covered by the regulations and who is not.

These regulations introduced limits on weekly working time for mobile workers (drivers, vehicle crew and others forming part of the travelling staff) who operate on vehicles which are subject to EU Drivers’ Hours and AETR Regulations.

The RTWTR do not supersede the EU drivers’ hours regime. Instead, mobile workers and their employers must abide by both sets of rules.

The Working Time Regulations 1998 (as amended) still apply to other workers, ie those working under UK Domestic Drivers Hours Regulations, Occasional Drivers and other non-driving workers which this topic explains.
