• Make a list of hazardous substances used on the contract.

  • Obtain the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) from the suppliers. If a gas or vapour is involved, establish whether the substance is heavier or lighter than air.

  • Check that the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is exactly the right one for the product to be used. Check the date of the form — sometimes out of date forms are used in error.

  • Obtain any information that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) can provide.
