Employers should:

  • be aware of the guidance and Code of Practice published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills

  • be aware of the range of workers that are protected by the legislation

  • implement a whistleblowing policy enabling disclosures to be made internally and ensure all workers are aware of it

  • identify a designated person and an alternative to whom disclosures should be made

  • train the employees and HR managerssenior staff who will deal with the whistleblowing policy

  • ensure the policy sets out what is covered

  • ensure the policy sets out that whistleblowers will be protected

  • ensure that a worker is not dismissed for making a protected disclosure
