Through the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013, as amended, producers and distributors of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in the UK have a responsibility to reduce the amount of WEEE, and to support the reuse, recycling and recovery of such waste to reduce the adverse impact of disposal.
Producers are manufacturers, importers and rebranders of EEE, and are required to finance the collection, treatment and disposal of WEEE. Distributors are wholesalers, retailers, distance sellers and producers who sell their products directly onto the market. Distributors are required to provide means by which customers can take back their WEEE for correct treatment or disposal.
Businesses must ensure that their WEEE is segregated and sent for recovery at an approved authorised treatment facility (AATF). The supplier will finance this if the equipment was bought after August 2005.
