Develop a buddying scheme using children from Year 5. These children need to be specially trained so that they clearly understand their role and responsibilities and when they need to ask for support from school staff.
“Playground pals” works well at breaks and lunchtimes with older children ensuring that all the new Year 1 children are engaged in activities and not feeling intimidated by the older ones.
Choose assemblies or activities that will interest the reception class and initially have them attend occasionally, increasing the frequency as they near the end of the school year.
