This topic sets out legislation and guidance affecting local authorities that are terminating employment on grounds of redundancy or other grounds. It covers both the legal constraints which affect them, and their discretionary powers to offer compensation to employees which exceeds statutory requirements.
For the purposes of the calculation of entitlement to statutory redundancy payments, local government employees who transfer directly from one local government employer to another in the course of their employment preserve their entitlement to continuous employment, which commences on the first day of their initial contract of employment.
