There are two main approaches to talent management. The first approach is to confine the definition to the recruitment, development, deployment and retention of individuals who deliver strong performance on a consistent basis and who may be the future leaders of the organisation. The second is a more inclusive approach which looks for the talents each individual, no matter how junior their jobs, can bring to their tasks and develops that. As a line manager you may be involved in either or both approaches, depending on the strategy of your organisation. Talent management will usually be part of an organisation-wide approach to making the most of its human capital, ie the people it employs.
