Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others. It is defined as a “spectrum” condition because it affects people in very different ways.

Some people with autism may be service users in need of adult social care. There is therefore a need for all care service managers and care staff to have the necessary training, awareness, understanding and skills to support people with autism.

For the duration of the global coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, service users in adult residential care settings with autism are likely to have intensified feelings of anxiety, fear, uncertainty and stress. Restrictions on visiting and social isolation or shielding will have intensified issues for these service users.

The pandemic is likely to have disrupted routines, causing further problems for service users who may have difficulty comprehending this complex situation and expressing themselves.
