During the course of individual supervision sessions, managers can expect to have to deal with a variety of issues relating to the performance and practice of the staff member(s) concerned.

For most issues, it is important to follow a structured process.

  1. Place the matter on the agenda:

    1. eg “We need to discuss the fact that you seem to be late for work a lot of the time these days.”

  2. Engage with the person to address the issue, taking into account that the person might be threatened by it.

  3. Find out through questioning and discussion:

    1. what the presenting issue actually is

    2. whether the presenting issue is a sign of a more deep-seated and possibly serious issue.
