Before any motor vehicle can be driven on the roads, the driver must hold a licence valid for that category of vehicle. Drivers must be accompanied by a suitably qualified and experienced person until a test of basic competence and familiarity with UK traffic law has been passed.

This topic covers the general requirements for all categories of driving licence and those specific to Group 1 (non-vocational) licences for vehicles with up to eight passenger seats and/or maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes. Specific requirements for Group 2 (vocational) licences to drive larger goods and passenger carrying vehicles are in the topic on Vocational Driving Licences.
