The primary security concern for most schools is the personal safety of staff, pupils and visitors. Intrusion onto school premises, vandalism, violent or abusive parents and burglary are key concerns.

However, it is vital to ensure that appropriate levels of security are balanced with the need to keep the school premises a welcoming environment with adequate access for parents and visitors. Likewise, the amount of money spent (via capital purchases or leasing) on security systems must be in proportion to the risks involved. Listening to the opinions of staff, pupils, parents, visitors and security experts is the best way to develop a proportionate approach.

Lone working, arson prevention, building security features into the design of school buildings and dealing with weapons in schools are covered in separate topics.
