Generally, all vehicles must now be fitted with approved seat belt anchorages and seat belts. When carrying children, it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that they use a seat belt or child restraint appropriate to their age and size. Adult passengers are responsible for complying with the law themselves, but the driver must inform them of the requirement to wear a seat belt.
The vehicle keeper should:
ensure that all vehicles are fitted with seat belt anchorages and seat belts to the required specification
ensure that the seat belts are maintained in good condition and replace any that are defective
instruct drivers to wear a seat belt unless exempt
