Care services in Scotland, such as early learning daycare and childminding services, cannot operate unless they are registered with the appropriate regulatory body, the Care Inspectorate. The regulator is responsible for inspecting services, awarding grades and setting out improvements that must be made. They also investigate complaints about care services and take action when standards are not reached.

The Care Inspectorate works with Education Scotland to inspect early learning educational provision. See associated topic, Inspections: Scotland.
