All schools are expected to be autonomous, self-managing and self-improving institutions. They are best placed to identify their own strengths and areas for development. They now have much more data and information to support self-evaluation, but, evidence, particularly data, must be used selectively and corroborated.

Schools are expected to implement their own plans and actions for improvement. Although there is no requirement to complete a self-evaluation statement, it is considered good practice for all types of school, including independent schools, academies and free schools, to do so.
