All schools are expected to be autonomous, self-managing and self-improving institutions. They are best placed to identify their own strengths and areas for development. They now have much more data and information to support self-evaluation, but, evidence, particularly data, must be used selectively and corroborated. In Ofsted terminology the word is “connected”.

Schools are expected to implement their own plans and actions for improvement. Although there is no requirement to complete a self-evaluation statement, it is considered good practice for all types of school to do so, including independent schools, academies and free schools.

All schools must prioritise education recovery and the DfE has produced guidance to support this: “Teaching a broad and balanced curriculum for education recovery”. Guidance is always optional but it would be a foolish school which chooses to ignore this.
