Summary

Schools are required to keep admission registers and attendance registers by law. They can be kept in hard copy or electronic form, but must be legible and open to inspection and auditing. Changes can only be made under certain specified circumstances.

Schools also keep educational records about present and former pupils, and are obliged to forward this information to the new school when a pupil moves.

The requirements around the processing of data in school registers and records are covered in the Data Protection topic.
