An employee may be dismissed as redundant when a business closes down, either completely or at a particular site, or if there is a diminishing need for employees at their organisation to carry out work of the kind that the employee is employed to do. Redundancy can apply to police staff, as normal employees. However, there is no provision for police officers to be made redundant, although provision does exist under the Police Pensions Regulations for the compulsory retirement of police officers where retention would not be in the general interests of force efficiency.
