Service users receiving an adult social care service might suffer from a range of mental health issues that require assessment and treatment by mental health professionals, who will normally be accessed through the individual’s GP.

Care providers and staff must understand the mental health and wellbeing needs of their service users. They should also have the knowledge and skills to respond sensitively to service users’ mental health needs in their daily care and in obtaining the appropriate medical and professional help.

The global Covid-19 outbreak has caused unparalleled pressures on healthcare service provision and service users in adult social care have been particularly negatively affected. It is essential everyone considers colleagues’, service users’ and families’ health, safety and mental wellbeing in a way that provides support now and for the future.
