This Act introduced several new offences, and increased the penalties applicable for others. It further introduced:
a new system of endorsement of licenses
powers to prohibit driving and payment of deposits pending prosecution
new provisions to deal with drink-driving and speeding.
In addition to this, there are a number of other amendments to road traffic law generally.
The principal provisions are summarised below.
Drink-driving — where a person is found guilty of failing without reasonable excuse to allow a specimen to be subjected to a laboratory test, the endorsement of their licence will remain effective for 11 years from the date of the conviction.
