A prescription is an authority by a suitably qualified practitioner for medication to be dispensed to a named patient in accordance with that practitioner's instructions. In primary care both doctors and suitably trained nurses can prescribe. While prescribing has traditionally involved signing paper forms, prescribing is now increasingly accomplished using electronic systems.
