The maximum dimensions and weights of vehicles that may circulate freely within EU Member States are harmonised by Directive 96/53/EC as amended by 2002/7/EC. Prior authorisation and more liberal local legislation may allow larger vehicles to travel in some EU countries and elsewhere overseas, but the following are the maximum general limits allowed. For details of the long-term (until at least 2016) experiment in Germany authorising the use of over permitted length and weight “gigaliners”, see the Germany country page.
Vehicles that are within these specified weights will need no special prior authority for travel. Individual country pages provide guidance on how authority for abnormal loads may be sought.
