A personal relationship can broadly be defined as one where there is a romantic or sexual relationship, or a strong familiarity, between two individuals. Personal relationships between staff and students should always be discouraged, because of the potential for misunderstanding and for abuse of the situation. Whilst relationships should be explicitly forbidden if the student is under the age of 18 or a vulnerable adult, managers need to have procedures in place to respond appropriately to relationships between staff and other students.

Managers must also respond impartially to personal relationships between members of staff, whilst making sure that the relationship does not impact on the business needs and success of the college.

Staff must recognise their professional and ethical responsibilities to protect the interests of students and adhere to the college’s policy on personal relationships.
