Performance of academic staff in higher education (HE) institutions has historically been measured by the peer review process. This is increasingly being complemented by a performance management process that relies on a system of appraisals and, possibly, incentives. Performance management strategies need to be aligned to the institution’s overall strategy and could include both individual and team appraisal.

The overall performance in research of any institution is assessed through the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Due to Covid-19, REF was paused for four months but resumed with additional guidance on Covid revisions on 31 July 2020. The revised deadline is now 31 March 2021.
