All working in learning disabilities services should be aware that:
there are many different types of learning disability, which can be caused by the way the brain develops before, during and after birth
people with a learning disability will need different kinds and levels of help as children and as adults; many can live independent lives with little or no support except when difficulties arise
people who are described as having profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), which can include physical as well as learning impairments, may require permanent, continuous care and support to meet their basic everyday needs
